Vets Lobby

Bella, a 2-year-old intact female Beagle, is rushed in 20 minutes after being struck by a car at moderate speed. The owner reports she did not lose consciousness at the scene but has become progressively more obtunded en route.

Triage Assessment:

Airway
Patent, but open-mouth gasping with paradoxical chest movement.
Breathing
Rapid and shallow. Lung sounds muffled bilaterally — worse dorsally.
Circulation
HR 175 bpm, pale/grey mucous membranes, CRT 4.0s, weak and thready femoral pulses.
Disability (Neuro)
Dull mentation. Right pupil fixed and dilated — left pupil normal (Anisocoria).

Q1. The dorsal muffling is your loudest finding on auscultation. Before you move Bella toward the X-ray suite, what is the single most important action?
